The temple Sennyu-ji is the main temple of the Shingon sect Sennyuji School. The temple had strong connections with the imperial family. According to temple records Kukai (founder of the Shingon sect) built a simple structure on the site during the first half of the 9th century. In 1218 a new temple was dedicated on the site and named Sennyuji meaning 'temple of pure spring water.' 39 imperial family members were interred here including 14 emperors.
